NC Moonshine and Motorsports Trail Travels to Nascar Hall of Fame
CHARLOTTE, NC – North Carolina’s new Moonshine and Motorsports Trail made its latest stop in Charlotte.
Moonshine and Motorsports, a match made in the mountains and main roads of the country. A match that is not always discussed.
“But there is an incredible linkage when you go back into the early days of nascar and that linkage is no stronger anywhere else than in North Carolina, so we were honored to be a part of it and to help tell that story,” said Winston Kelley, the executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
At the beginning of February, Gov. Roy Cooper and the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources unveiled a trail that highlights the history and impact of the connection in our state.
“It’s not a story that a lot of other states can tell in the way that we can. So we thought as a department that presents North Carolina’s history that we should be very intentional about telling people about this connection between distilling and car racing,” said Reid Wilson, the secretary of the NCDNCR.
Starting in Rockingham, Wilson followed the trail here to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a proponent of the partnership from the beginning.
“There were people as we were designing the hall of fame that said that’s not a story that NASCAR is going to be that excited for you to say or would even tell you couldn’t, that could not have been any further from the truth. Just like everything else our commitment with NASCAR is that we are going to tell the story the right way,” said Kelley.
From Occoneechee to North Wilkseboro, each of the eight stops has something new to offer.
“I think what is really interesting is each one of them tells a different and unique story so you can learn a lot about this history of distilling and racing all in one place,” said Wilson.
