West Charlotte Lions Continue to Impose Their Will
CHARLOTTE, NC – The high school football season is already halfway over. There are still a handful of undefeated teams left in the area, of which the most surprising is arguably West Charlotte High School.
The West Charlotte Lions went on a mission over the summer to prove they were the kings of the jungle.
Undefeated after more than a month of football, they are certainly on the right track. While they had their doubters before the season began, they gave their opponents fair warning.
“We was trying to let everybody know, now everybody want to jump ship on West Charlotte. Nah we really want people to stay where they was at before the season started, we just gone keep this thing rolling,” said DeQuinder Williams, a senior defensive back and commit to the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
But they are not satisfied with their early success. Even after early routes of Palisades high school and Monroe high school, they felt they had left points off of the board.
“Like we can’t get comfortable right now. Yeah we might be 4-0. We might be ranked number two, but we not even worried about that for real,” said Williams.
In the month of September they caught their stride, extending their win streak in multiple stand-out games. The first of which ended in a last-second victory over long time rivals, the Independence Patriots. The Lions took a week to rest, then came back and continued to capitalize on their momentum with a goal line stand on the road to take down the heavyweight high school in the conference, Mallard Creek for the first time since Lions’ head coach Sam Griener took over.
“Man that drive right there was like a movie. We was just going through our motto, ‘Man the Throne’, got through the tough times and that is really what our team is all about,” said Williams.
“You gotta find ways to win you know winners find a way and I feel like this team has a whole group of winners whether they are freshmen sophomores or seniors. The key is they are resilient, they understand what this means to them this season,” said Griener.
West Charlotte extended their winning streak both in the conference and overall in a route over West Mecklenburg to take home the war of westside trophy, and they do not plan to slow down any time soon. So go on and doubt “Dub C and the “Ford Boyz” all you want, they dare you to be surprised come December.
“You know when the dust settles, are they a believer or not? The whole key is the guys that we fight with, the coaches that we play with, the administration we have at West Charlotte, they believe. The people that matter, the ones that are close to us, they believe and that’s all the support we need,” said Griener.
Head Coach Griener and the Lions continue conference play, as they travel to Hopewell on Friday, September 29, 2023 to take on the Titans.
